6 simple steps to turn a drawing into vector art:
In a few simple steps we will tell you how to turn a drawing into vector art. This technique can help you create a logo, business cards, t-shirts or any design you need.
1-Draw your idea. As simple as you can. Meaning solid lines, no grays. Just contours.
Try to be simple and think it as if you are a kid. If you want to incorporate a pencil is a “simple pencil” not a Montblanc.
2-Take a picture with your phone
Email it to yourself 🙂
3-Open it in Adobe Illustrator or any vector app
4-Start tracing the lines with the “ink/pen” tool
This is the complex part. You need to place the picture (File>Place) and lock it (Object>Lock). Then select the Pen Tool (press “p”).
Draw lines over the drawing. Try to create simple shapes and faces. Close objects separately. You will need it later.
5- Add text to make it look like your drawing.
Click on Text tool and start typing. Then scale the text to fit your sketch. Now you can start trying some font alternatives. Keep in mind the style of your logo to select fonts matching it. You can search for fonts on Google Fonts for free
And you can add some reflections and shines too. Just make objects in a 30% white transparent.
6- Now export it as .PNG for Facebook, Twitter and web usages. And “save as” .PDF for printing purposes.
Now your logo is ready. One more thing about color. Try to be solid. Avoid gradients and textures. Logos are made to be simple. Don’t use more than 2 or 3 colors on you logo and don’t use RGB colors (the never will print as you see on screen)
